Wheels move the body; two wheels move the soul.

This guest post is from Bicycle Colorado Business Member White Crown Federal Credit Union. They are based in Denver, serving over 5,000 members in the region and supporting bike advocacy through their membership with Bicycle Colorado.

White Crown Federal Credit Union was founded in 1951 by eight employees of the Rock Mountain division of Standard Oil to serve employees and families of Standard Oil in the Rocky Mountain area. Today White Crown—Your Credit Union—serves over 5,000 members in the Denver region with more than $60 million in assets, and we continue to grow stronger each year! Our profits are returned back to our members, not shareholders, in the form of lower (or no) fees, higher deposit rates and competitive loan rates. White Crown is locally-based with local decision makers who understand your unique needs.

Bike Loans—a Mile-High idea for the Mile-High city

Back in 2016, White Crown Federal Credit Union took a look around our downtown branch at Lincoln Park and saw the changes that had been slowly happening around us for years—more and more bike lanes being constructed, high-rise apartment buildings being built without ample car parking, and downtown workers heading to the office on bicycles. The face of commuting had changed.

Think you can’t afford your dream bike? Think again!

It was then that we recognized and filled a niche that no other financial institution had filled—bike loans. Sure, anyone can head out to the local bike shop and charge a bicycle, paying high credit card rates with interest adding up for months, maybe years. But the rate on our bike loans is nearly SEVENTY PERCENT lower than the rate of the average credit card in 2020! Why? Because credit unions are built on the foundation of People Helping People. It’s the credit union philosophy, and how we do business at White Crown Federal Credit Union.

Our bike loans were built to help you—whether you are looking for a green alternative to driving, a healthier option than commuting by bus or rail, or just love to hit the trails on weekends. We finance up to $20,000, including accessories such as locks, lights, fenders, helmets, pedals, brakes, tools, racks, bike bags and more (up to 105% of purchase price) with terms up to 60 months. Get preapproved before you shop so you know what you can afford, and pay off the loan anytime without worrying about prepayment penalties. Apply online at WhiteCrown.org.

Our innovative ideas didn’t stop there.

We know that, often, falling in love with your next road or mountain bike is an impulse decision—one that didn’t leave you time to get preapproved. So, we created a bike loan app that we offer to Denver-area bike shops. With our bike loan app, available on the App Store (Apple) and Google Play (Android), once a bike shop is set up with us their customers can apply for our low-rate bike loans on the spot AND get approved often on the same or next business day! We’ll pay the bike shop so you can ride off on your new bike. If your favorite bike shop isn’t signed up for our mobile app, have them reach out. We’d love to help them help you!

Credit unions are for everyone—even you.

Credit unions aren’t just for your grandparents, or for employees of specific businesses. Credit unions exist to serve their communities, and that’s what we do at White Crown Federal Credit Union. Since being founded 70 years ago, we’ve been doing what all the big banks do, but better! And if you live in the Denver area, you can join for free and take advantage of our lower (or no) fees, higher deposit rates, and competitive loan rates. As a White Crown member you are part owner, not just an account number. There’s a good chance if you stop by our branch at 2001 Lincoln, we’ll grow to know you by name!

Supporting bike advocacy and feeding our community

In addition to our support of Bicycle Colorado, we are deeply rooted and give back to the communities in which we serve. We care about you and your financial well-being. It’s because of this that we believe that we succeed when our members and community succeed. Since 2008, we have supported the Food Bank of the Rockies, matching our members’ donations each year through our FeedCO program. From 2008 through 2020, White Crown, along with our members, have donated $119,736.09—or 478,937 meals—to help feed our local community.
