This week, Senators John Carson and Marc Snyder introduced
Senate Bill 281,
which would Increase Penalties for Careless Driving Resulting in Death from a class one misdemeanor to a class six felony
. The bill will be heard in the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday, April 16, at 1:30 PM. If you care about seeing this legislation move forward, we need your support!
Bicycle Colorado encourages you to join a virtual advocacy meeting on Monday, April 14, to learn more about the bill and ways you can show your support. A few of the topics we’ll discuss include:
1. What is in the bill
2. Arguments for and against the bill
3. Actions you can take to support the bill
4. Tips and tricks for testifying virtually and in person
If you’re interested in testifying, which can be done in person or virtually, I encourage you to pencil this into your calendars from 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM. One bill is on the agenda before SB 281; we expect our bill to be up before 2:00 PM.
If you plan to testify in person, I also encourage you to attend a press conference, which will begin at 12:30 PM on April 16 at the Capitol. Having a group of advocates attend the press event would be a helpful expression of solidarity. The aim of the press conference is to highlight the need to address traffic violence and the merits of SB-281. Additional details will be shared before Wednesday.
Finally, please forward this email to anyone you think may be interested.
