Attending Safe Streets Day 2025

What You Need To Know

Want more and better options for biking and walking? Want the communities where you live and work to have safer roads? Join us at the state capitol on Wednesday, March 5, to lobby for better biking and walking.

Safe Streets Day at the Capitol is the perfect time to show up and speak up about what matters to you. Do it for yourself, your family, and your friends. The event is brief—from 8 to 10:30 a.m.- and free. Registration includes coffee, tea, and a light breakfast.

Your legislators want to hear from YOU. YOUR voice makes a difference.

New this year, we’ve made it easy to let your legislators know that you will be attending Safe Streets Day. You can use our Action Alert to contact your elected officials.

What To Expect

Safe Streets Day at the Capitol makes it easy to participate in our democracy. You just need to register and show up at the Capitol. We’ll help you prepare to advocate for bicyclist and pedestrian legislation and connect you with your state representatives.

The session will begin with orientation to prepare you for a productive conversation with your legislator. Topics will include:

  • How does a bill even come to be? How does a bill become a law?
  • Where the bike/ped-friendly bills are in the legislative process
  • Coaching to get the most out of your chats with legislators
  • Q&A

We’ll host a light breakfast with coffee and tea, encouraging legislators and their aides to come by, grab a bite, and meet with their constituents attending. There is no schedule or appointments; think of it as a “meet and greet” with your legislators and their teams.

Elected officials take seriously the concerns expressed in person by those they represent. They want to meet with their constituents.

What’s At Stake

As with all political movements, the stronger our collective voice, the better. Legislators are responsible for understanding and voting on a wide range of issues, so it’s essential to bring their attention to this cause: expanding access to safe biking and walking. And since it appears that the federal government will restrict or end programs that support safe biking and walking, it’s more important than ever that our state leaders step up.

You’ll have the opportunity to advocate for specific legislation. Bicycle Colorado is advocating for bills that:

  • Expand access to safe e-biking
  • Require certain departments of transportation and transportation planning organizations to adopt goals and plans that increase the number of people biking, walking, and taking public transportation
  • Increase minimum charges for people who hit and kill vulnerable road users from a class 1 misdemeanor to a class 6 felony.
  • Equip people with the latest knowledge on traffic laws and safe driving behaviors that keep all people safe on Colorado’s roads.
  • Enhance safety at intersections by reducing “right-hook” crashes.
  • Increase funding for bike and pedestrian infrastructure.

Safe Streets Day at the Capitol is a unique community event where people who care about improving safety on Colorado’s roads come together to advocate for this vital cause.

We hope to see you there.
