Raise Awareness

Share The Road License Plates

Share the Road license plates raise awareness and funds for safer biking in Colorado. They promote safe, respectful use of our roads by all. With nearly 6,000 plates on vehicles across the state, we’re spreading the message and raising funds to make Colorado an even more bicycle-friendly place.

Why Get Share the Road Plates?

At Bicycle Colorado, we envision a future where all people and communities benefit from safe and accessible biking. The Share the Road license plates support our mission by promoting safe and respectful driving behaviors between motorists and cyclists. Funds raised from plate purchases support bike education, which encourages both drivers and cyclists to safely share the road.

The Share the Road license plate was signed into law by Governor Ritter on June 3, 2007, at the Elephant Rock Cycling Festival.

Our goal aligns with Vision Zero, a strategy to eliminate traffic fatalities and severe injuries while promoting safe, healthy, and equitable mobility. Bicycle Colorado is committed to making roads safer for all users, especially vulnerable road users like cyclists.

When you purchase a Share the Road license plate, you help make Colorado’s roads safer for everyone and express your support.

How It Works

Step 1. Get Your PIN

Order your Share the Road certificate PIN online. You’ll make a one-time $25 donation to Bicycle Colorado, and we’ll email your PIN. Please allow a few business days to receive your PIN. If you need it expedited, instructions will be in your confirmation email.

Alternatively, if you purchased a paper certificate in person at a Denver-area BikeSource, Email Bicycle Colorado at [email protected] to get your PIN for online or in-person processing through the DMV. You’ll need to provide us with your name(s) exactly as they are listed on your vehicle registration in order for us to process your PIN.

Step 2. Process With The DMV

With your certificate PIN, complete your transaction online through DMV in-person or e-services. You’ll pay a one-time, $50 state specialty license fee plus your regular registration fees.

FAQ

The total cost is $75, plus your regular vehicle registration fee. Here’s the breakdown:

  • $25 is a one-time, tax-deductible donation to Bicycle Colorado. This is paid through our online portal and goes toward bicycle safety education.

  • $50 is the state’s one-time specialty license plate fee, paid to your county clerk.

We recommend ordering online at least 2-3 business days ahead of time. Email [email protected] to ask about getting it expedited.

There are a few options:
Take advantage of the 1-month grace period (Example: your registration expired in March, and you have until April 30 to get updated tags on your vehicle).

If you’re in your grace period, renew your plates now, then take your certificate to your county clerk’s office and transfer your registration to your Share the Road plates. They’ll issue a credit for the unused months on your current registration.
