Commitment To Equity And Inclusion

As a statewide organization, Bicycle Colorado is responsible for thoughtfully serving and representing all Coloradans who want or need to ride a bicycle.

For decades, multiple groups in our society — lower-income, youth, seniors, LGBTQ+, people with disabilities, and people of color, to name a few — have fought to have a voice in the policy decisions that impact their lives. Too often, people in power resisted these efforts, and many public and private institutions adopted discriminatory policies and practices that propagated systemic injustices such as racism, classism, misogyny, ableism, and transphobia. These systemic injustices resulted in the inequitable investment of resources across communities, such that many lack essential biking, walking, and transit infrastructure. As a result, significant disparities exist across populations in traffic crashes and health and economic outcomes, and representation in the bike industry and organized bike events does not reflect the diversity of our state.

Bicycle Colorado will fight injustices and inequities that prevent people from having access to public spaces where they are treated with dignity and feel safe when riding a bike or walking. To this end, we will elevate the voices of underrepresented populations where key decisions are made and cultivate relationships with people working to implement policies and practices that right the wrongs of the past and ensure marginalized communities receive the resources to secure the fundamental right to ride a bike and walk without fearing for their safety. Our responsibility is to earn our partners’ trust and become a valued contributor to this work.

We will proceed on this journey with humility and empathy, inviting our members and other supporters to join us. We are committed to examining, questioning, and learning from our assumptions and biases. We will hold ourselves and those who work with us accountable for contributing to an inclusive and equitable Colorado.

Traffic Violence Is Preventable

We are dedicated to advancing evidence-based policies and programs that make biking and walking safer, more accessible, and more enjoyable for everyone in the state.
